French Director Unveils Asterix Series Set to Stream on Netflix

LILLE, France, 24 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Celebrated French director Alain Chabat has once again joined forces with the indomitable Gauls for a new 3D animated series of Asterix, more than two decades after his acclaimed film Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra. The series was unveiled at a festival in Lille on Sunday and is set to premiere on Netflix on 30 April.

A Modern Take on a Classic Story

The series is based on Asterix and the Big Fight, the seventh instalment of the legendary comic series created by writer René Goscinny and illustrator Albert Uderzo in 1961. This adaptation consists of five episodes, each approximately 20 minutes long, with three episodes receiving an enthusiastic reception at the Lille festival.

The story revisits the adventures of Asterix and his loyal companion, Obelix, as they defend the last unconquered Gaulish village against Roman occupation in 50 BC. A dramatic twist unfolds when the village druid, Getafix, loses both his memory and the recipe for the magic potion after an unfortunate accident involving a menhir thrown by Obelix. Meanwhile, the Romans conspire to deepen tensions between rival Gaulish tribes, forcing Chief Vitalstatistix to engage in a high-stakes battle against Ceramix, the leader of a neighbouring Gallo-Roman settlement.

A Stellar Cast and Direction

Alain Chabat, who directed the highly successful Mission Cleopatra (2002), lends his own voice to Asterix in this adaptation. Obelix is voiced by Gilles Lellouche, who previously portrayed the character in the 2023 live-action film Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, which amassed an impressive 4.6 million ticket sales.

Chabat originally envisioned the project as a full-length animated film but later opted for a series format, allowing greater flexibility to explore new characters and storylines.

Asterix’s Enduring Popularity

Asterix remains one of the most beloved comic franchises globally, with over 400 million copies sold in 130 languages and dialects. Earlier this year, Ukrainian was added to the growing list of translations. The 41st Asterix comic book is also set for release in October 2025, further cementing its place in literary and pop culture history.

Chabat’s 2002 adaptation Mission Cleopatra remains the most successful Asterix film adaptation, drawing nearly 15 million cinema-goers in France alone. It remains the eighth highest-grossing film in French history and the fourth most successful French production.
