Jack Lilley, the actor renowned for his portrayal of a stagecoach driver in Little House on the Prairie, has passed away at the age of 91. His son, Clint Lilley, confirmed that Jack passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, March 19, at the Motion Picture & Television Fund retirement home in Calabasas, California.
In a moving tribute to his father, Clint shared his deep admiration, calling Jack “one of a kind” and reflecting on their unique connection to Hollywood. “We got a glimpse of the old Hollywood… because he came out of that and saw the transition,” Clint said. “He witnessed so much change in the industry, and we were kind of raised around it as little kids.”
Clint fondly remembered their time on the set of Little House on the Prairie, where Jack was a regular figure, often seen driving a horse-drawn carriage transporting the characters between towns. He recalled how his father imparted valuable lessons about the entertainment industry. “He taught us that we had to work for it and nothing was going to be handed to you. You have to go get it. He made sure of that. I’m thankful for that, because he wanted to make sure we were grounded,” Clint laughed, reflecting on Jack’s guidance.

Jack Lilley’s role on Little House on the Prairie was not limited to just one iconic appearance. He was also featured in several made-for-television movies within the Little House franchise, including Little House: Look Back to Yesterday (1983), The Last Farewell (1984), and Bless All the Dear Children (1984).
Clint spoke of his father’s generosity, recalling that Jack helped many people within the industry, often working behind the scenes to make things happen. “He could make things happen, and he was always willing to help,” Clint said. “He was that guy.”
The actor’s contributions extended beyond Little House on the Prairie. He also appeared in notable films such as Blazing Saddles and Planet of the Apes, and worked as a stuntman on films like Sudden Impact and Young Guns.
A number of Jack’s colleagues, including Little House co-star Melissa Gilbert, have expressed their grief over his passing. Gilbert took to social media, writing, “The little house family has lost one of our own. Jack Lilley has passed away. He also happened to be one of my favourite people on the planet. He taught me how to ride a horse when I was just a wee little thing. He was so patient with me.”
Gilbert shared how Jack had been an essential part of Little House, not only as Victor French’s photo double but also in many other roles. “He always felt like home to me,” she added in her tribute, which was accompanied by a cherished photo of Jack in a cowboy hat.
